Update on Low Bridge on Bridge Road

Update on Low Bridge on Bridge Road

Council workers were on site this morning, 21 November 2016, to begin clearing the low level bridge.

Below is a photo we published on the BRACe whatsapp group this morning, 21 November 2016.

I know that our Councillor has been chasing JRA and Council to attend to the bridge so hopefully this will lead to the bridge being cleared for use, if safe to do so.

One of our residents also posted the following:

I had a 2nd assessment done by a civil engineer on Friday. His view is that the bridge is sound and hasn't moved and the hole on the east approach can be filled. First priority is to remove the debris that blocks the flow and can cause a damming effect which could result in future damage to the bridge.

The river sand on the east side should be mixed with about 50 bags of cement  ( 10 to 1)  to fill the hole in 200 mm layers that must be wetted with a hose pipe to cause compaction. This will only require limited labour and a few thousand rand of cement. It would be ready to use in about a week but cars only..no heavy vehicles..and with an 'at own risk' sign. An even more limited low budget  patch could be effected to create a single lane only...one car at a time. He suggested we approach the city engineer with this suggestion in coordination with our councillor and rate payers association.

They have also blocked entrance to the bridge for safe keeping.
