Report back on Sunday's attempted Frankenwald Land Invasions

Well done to SAPS and JMPD who handled Sunday's's attempted land invasions of Frankenwald and Marlboro North impeccably. Our CPF Chair Andrew McMurray was there from 7am: he says they had everything under control and commended them for outstanding police work.

Buccleuch has a committee of residents that is engaged with Wits and other affected groups regarding the development of the Frankenwald area between Buccleuch and Kelvin.

The committee queried a comment made by the Gauteng Province during last week's attempted invasion of Frankenwold that the 'land is earmarked for development for the people of Alexandra township'.

Wits has clarified that the comment is not correct. While there have been discussions with the Gauteng Dept of Human Settlements nothing is settled and there will be an open tender process later this year.

Wits' objective is to develop the land in a manner which  provides annuity income to assist academically qualified but poor students to study at Wits (this appears to be in line with the requirements of the Deed of Gift in terms of which the land was originally given to the University).

Wits will ensure that the land is developed 'in a manner which adds to the urban fabric of the city, providing a mixed used and mixed income development which will deliver both accommodation and jobs.'

Wits is currently working on a document which all parties agree on, and which will form the basis for any further engagement with all interested parties, including developers, affected communities, political groups and the media.  They will circulate the document when it has been finalised.

BRACe will continue to engage with this development through the committee.
