Illegal Waste Mining and Recycling Areas
BRA has been engaging with a number of stakeholders, including the City and SANRAL, to clean up our suburb.
One concern raised by residents is illegal waste mining taking place throughout the suburb and along the river opposite the Bridge Shopping Centre. That strip of land and old road is owned by SANRAL. They have advised that they will be removing illegal users on the strip and Pikitup has agreed to assist with the removal of the waste.
Incidentally, each waste miner needs to have a permit to operate in a specific area - none of those operating in Buccleuch have permits and therefore can be reported to JMPD and removed.
We are aware of the challenges faced by informal traders and waste miners and propose to raise the issue at our next BRA Residents meeting to elicit the community's views.
Regarding waste miners and recycling areas:
Jim Powell has engaged with an organisation called Skeemsaam who run a successful initiative in other parts of Johannesburg to assist waste miners to integrate within their suburbs. We will ask Skeemsaam to present their initiative at our next Community Meeting, and share how it can assist the suburb and empower waste miners.
Regarding informal traders:
Assuming this is what residents want our Ward 32 Environmental Health Representatives will assist us to draft a proposal to create a demarcated informal traders area, and we can negotiate with SANRAL for land use.
